SMD Resistor Code Calculator
Type the code printed on a surface-mount resistor and get its value instantly. Works with 3-digit codes (103 = 10 kΩ), 4-digit codes (1002 = 10 kΩ), letter notation (4K7 = 4.7 kΩ, 4R7 = 4.7 Ω) and EIA-96 codes (01C = 10 kΩ).
3-digit (jaise 103 = 10 kΩ), 4-digit, letter notation (4K7) aur EIA-96 sabhi saported hain.
103 is 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ (10 × 1000). A resistor marked 472 is 4.7 kΩ, 1002 is 10 kΩ, 4K7 is 4.7 kΩ, and 01C is 10 kΩ.
Tip: most codes are 3 digits. Letters work too: 4K7 = 4.7 kΩ. Uppercase or lowercase both.
How the SMD resistor code works
Surface-mount (SMD/chip) resistors are too small for colour bands, so the value is printed as a short code. There are four common formats:
1. Three-digit code (most common, usually ±5%)
The first two digits are the value, the third digit is the number of zeros to add.
| Code | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
103 | 10 × 1000 | 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ |
472 | 47 × 100 | 4,700 Ω = 4.7 kΩ |
470 | 47 × 1 | 47 Ω (not 470!) |
220 | 22 × 1 | 22 Ω |
2. Four-digit code (1% precision)
The first three digits are the value, the fourth digit is the multiplier.
| Code | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
1002 | 100 × 100 | 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ |
4701 | 470 × 10 | 4,700 Ω = 4.7 kΩ |
4700 | 470 × 1 | 470 Ω (not 4700!) |
2001 | 200 × 10 | 2,000 Ω = 2 kΩ |
3. Letter notation (R, K, M — the letter is the decimal point)
The letter replaces the decimal point: R = ohms, K = kilo-ohms, M = mega-ohms (G = giga-ohms). This avoids a leading dot that could be missed when printed.
| Code | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
4K7 | 4.7 kilo-ohms | 4.7 kΩ |
1K2 | 1.2 kilo-ohms | 1.2 kΩ |
10K | 10 kilo-ohms | 10 kΩ |
2M2 | 2.2 mega-ohms | 2.2 MΩ |
4R7 | 4.7 ohms | 4.7 Ω |
0R22 or R22 | 0.22 ohms | 0.22 Ω |
10R | 10 ohms | 10 Ω |
4. EIA-96 code (1% resistors, small packages)
Three characters: two digits look up a base value in the EIA-96 table, the letter is a multiplier.
| Code | Lookup | Multiplier | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
01C | 01 → 100 | C = ×100 | 10 kΩ |
39D | 39 → 249 | D = ×1000 | 249 kΩ |
85X | 85 → 750 | X = ×0.1 | 75 Ω |

FAQ
What does a 103 SMD resistor mean?
103 means 10 followed by 3 zeros: 10 × 1000 = 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ. The first two digits are the value, the third is the number of zeros.
Is a resistor marked 470 equal to 470 ohms?
No. 470 is 47 × 1 = 47 Ω. The third digit is a multiplier, not another value digit. For 470 Ω you need 471.
What does 1002 mean?
Four-digit code: 100 × 100 = 10 kΩ. Four-digit codes are typically 1% tolerance.
What do 4K7, 1K2 and 2M2 mean?
The letter is the decimal point: 4K7 = 4.7 kΩ, 1K2 = 1.2 kΩ, 2M2 = 2.2 MΩ, 4R7 = 4.7 Ω, 0R22 = 0.22 Ω, 10K = 10 kΩ.
What is EIA-96?
A 3-character code for 1% resistors: two digits look up a base value, the letter is a multiplier. 01C = 100 × 100 = 10 kΩ; 39D = 249 × 1000 = 249 kΩ.
Which code is 1 kΩ?
102 (10 × 100) or 1001 (1000 × 1). Both are 1000 Ω.
Which code is 4.7 kΩ?
472 (47 × 100) or 4701 (470 × 10).
Do SMD resistors use colour bands?
No — they are too small, so they use printed codes. Colour bands are for through-hole resistors. If you are repairing a laptop or phone board and need the part fitted, see our laptop repair service or engineer-approved parts.
